Mount Tom (4,051’) and Mount Field (4,327’) are two of New Hampshire’s 4,000-foot peaks. Each offers a unique and different experience in the White Mountains. Mount Tom’s wooded summit lacks a view, but it’s an interesting hike nevertheless. Meanwhile, Mount Field offers sweeping vistas that make the climb seem like a small price to pay for the beauty. Along the way back, you’ll also pass over Mount Avalon. Its lower elevation belies the stunning views, arguably the best of the three.
Trail Overview
The hike begins at Crawford Notch, behind the train station for the Conway Scenic Railroad. From here, you’ll start on the Avalon Trail. The path begins gently but soon becomes a steep ascent after the first stream crossing. At 1.3 miles, you’ll connect with the A-Z Trail, which leads to the Mount Tom Spur Trail. A short climb on this spur brings you to the summit of Mount Tom. The summit is marked by a simple rock cairn and lacks views. However, the surrounding forest provides a quiet, serene atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for a snack and a drink before you continue on.
From the summit of Mount Tom, retrace your steps to the Willey Range Trail and head toward Mount Field. The trail has moderate climbs and rocky sections, rewarding you with panoramic views just below the summit cairn. Here, you will see breathtaking scenes of the Crawford Notch and the Presidential Range. This view is perfect for a well-earned break.
The hike then continues down to Mount Avalon via the Avalon Trail. While Avalon stands at a lower elevation, taking the spur trail to its summit is a must. Its open ledges offer striking views of Crawford Notch. They reveal the peaks beyond. These views make it the highlight for the entire hike.
Returning from Mount Avalon, you’ll descend steep and rocky terrain to reconnect with the Avalon Trail, retracing your path back to the trailhead.
