The Arethusa Falls and Frankenstein Cliff Loop offers amazing views from high cliffs and a majestic waterfall in New Hampshire’s Crawford Notch State Park. The loop is a moderate hike that begins at the trailhead parking area on Route 302.
For this hike, I took the loop counterclockwise, starting with the climb up Frankenstein Cliff. It’s a route I’d definitely recommend because the ascent is steep in spots, and trust me, it’s much easier to tackle those steep sections on the way up rather than down. After reaching the cliff, the trail follows the ridge, offering some views, before dropping down toward Arethusa Falls. From there, it’s a nice, scenic walk back to the trailhead on Route 302.
This loop is about 5.1 miles with nearly 1,600 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderate hike overall. While most of the trail is manageable, the climb up Frankenstein Cliff can feel a bit intense, especially for anyone with a fear of heights. The exposed sections and elevation changes might get your heart racing, but the views make it well worth the effort. By the time you reach Arethusa Falls, you’ll feel like you’ve really earned the reward of one of the best waterfalls in the White Mountains.
If you’re up for an adventure and don’t mind a bit of a climb, this loop offers a great mix of challenging terrain and stunning scenery—definitely one for your New Hampshire hiking list!
